Position overviewPosition title: IMS Postdoctoral Scholar (Paytan and Zelalem)
Salary range: Commensurate with qualifications and experience with a starting annual salary of $67,250. Minimum annual salary rates are made based on the individuals Experience Level, which is determined by the number of months of postdoctoral service at any institution. Percent time: Full-time (100%)
Anticipated start: As soon as possible after initial review of the applications. Ph.D. must be in hand at time of the initial appointment.
Position duration: MAXIMUM DURATION OF SERVICE IN A POSTDOCTORAL TITLE:
Postdoctoral Scholar appointments are full-time; initial appointment will be for one year, with the possibility of reappointment for up to two years. Reappointment will be contingent upon positive performance review and availability of funding. The total duration of an individuals postdoctoral service may not exceed five years, including postdoctoral service at any institution. Under limited circumstances, an exception to this limit may be considered, not to exceed a sixth year.

Position DescriptionThe Institute of Marine Sciences at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for a post-doctoral scientist with a focus on ecosystem modeling of coastal wetland restoration and nature based decarbonization, under the joint direction of Dr. Adina Paytan at UCSC and Dr. Zelalem Mekonnen at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LNBL). The post-doctoral scientist will use established models (ecosys and ATS) and include wetland process representations and parameterizations. After model benchmarking, the candidate will use the models to investigate how different coastal wetland restoration options and climate change will affect wetland carbon balance.
The position will be based at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in Berkeley, CA and will work closely with other LBNL and UCSC researchers.
Applicants with experience or expertise in the following areas are strongly encouraged to apply:
- Experience in mechanistic modeling of ecosystem processes (encompassing hydrology, geochemistry, water and carbon cycling, and vegetation dynamics)
- Experience with processes related to carbon cycling in wetlands
- Strong mathematical and numerical modeling skills
- Strong written and oral communication skills with significant motivation to publish in peer reviewed literature
- Strong interest in team-based interdisciplinary science, with the willingness and ability to work independently when required

QualificationsBasic qualifications (required at time of application)
- Ph.D. (or equivalent foreign degree) in earth science, climate science, ocean science, ecosystem modeling, ecology, or a related field. It is expected the degree will be completed at time of application, but no later than June 30, 2022.
- Research experience in numerical modeling methods and in the science of land surface processes.
